2014 College Counselor Bike Tour, Part I

IvyWise Counselor Nat and Others Tour Colleges in Ohio – All On A Bike! By Nat, Master Admissions Counselor Touring colleges is an essential part of the college admissions process, but few get to experience from the seat of a bicycle. I first participated in the College Counselor Bike Tour in 2009. Little did I know that this group of college counseling cyclists (or should I call them psychalists because they are just a tad bit crazy) would change my professional and personal life. In addition to being able to ride my bike for a week or two straight, I’m surrounded by some incredible college counseling colleagues and able to talk shop for hours on end as we pedal from one school to the next. Last year’s counselor bike tour was anchored at my alma mater, Skidmore College, but this year we traveled farther west, to tour colleges in Ohio. Often times it’s easy to rush through a school tour, then jump in the car and head off to the next school. The bike tour allows us enough time to absorb the school and surrounding area, while also sharing our individual thoughts with other counselors. Here are the colleges we saw along the way, and some fun facts about each. This is some good information to keep in mind as you plan your own college visits this fall and continue to build your balanced college list! The Ohio State University Our tour began when a group of my closest friends and I left New York state and drove to Ohio. We stayed the night Columbus and checked out Ohio State University and the surrounding area. There were a few pre-orientation programs going on and the excitement of attending the state flagship was tangible. We had a wonderful dinner at a local student hangout, Chumley’s, and we were able to see what is most apparent about OSU students; they love their school! Oberlin College The next morning, we left on a 120-mile bike ride to meet the rest of the group of counselors at Oberlin College. The ride was incredibly beautiful and Ohio drivers were quite bike-friendly due to the large Amish population who travel via horse and buggy, which makes drivers accustomed to passing cyclists. We arrived at Oberlin in time to catch a brief tour followed by dinner with the admissions staff in the dining hall. We stayed in Asia House, one of the themed housing options on campus, and were treated to a private concert by three Oberlin music conservatory students in the courtyard! I want to thank the staff with the attention to detail in terms of welcoming a group of cyclist to campus. Oberlin was presented authentically – a group of intellectual, college students that are passionate about what they were doing. It’s no surprise that Oberlin sends one of the highest percentages of students on to PhD programs every year. The opportunities to research with professors are plentiful, and many students take advantage of these opportunities. Oberlin’s Art Rental program was often a topic of conversation. Oberlin students can rent pieces of art for their dorm rooms for $5 per semester! The collection includes pieces by Picassos, Lichtenstein, Chagall, among others. Here is a list of the 20 most popular pieces. Nothing has ever happened to the art while in the possession of a student in the many years of this program, which is a testament to the student body’s understanding and respect for the arts! The College of Wooster The next day, four of us woke early and were treated to some time in the Oberlin pool before an awesome breakfast in the dining hall. We later left Oberlin for a nice 45-mile ride to The College of Wooster! As we crested the hill towards campus, the first thing that came into view was a bike repair tent with an ace mechanic waiting to service our bicycles. The folks at the Ride On Bicycle shop were a great help to us, and the College of Wooster went well beyond their call of duty. The admissions officer in charge of coordinating our visit, Charlie, was also a cyclist. He took the time to anticipate our needs and we really appreciate his efforts to make our arrival unforgettable. If The College of Wooster could do this well welcoming a group of counselors, imagine what the office can do with for prospective students! Wooster’s curriculum is distinctive in that it requires every one of their students to complete a major research project of their choice before graduating. I encourage anyone interested in undergraduate research to give Wooster a serious look. We were treated to fine accommodations at The Wooster Inn during our stay, which is a perfect place for a prospective family to stay when visiting Wooster. It’s close to campus and has everything one would need to feel comfortable when college touring! We met a couple of Wooster students at our formal dinner and I was impressed with how they each went out of their way to thank the college catering/wait staff after our meal. This gave me a really nice indication of the type of community that Wooster has and I sincerely hope more students find this hidden gem of a school! Kenyon College The next morning after breakfast in the dining hall, we embarked on our 37-mile ride to Kenyon College. Our route to Kenyon proved to be the toughest of the tour, and we were relieved to finally arrive on campus. Kenyon holds a special place in my heart because I traveled extensively with the Dean of Admissions from Kenyon as part of a travel consortium through Asia and Hawaii, which included Skidmore (where I was a counselor), Kenyon, Colorado College, Colby College and St. John’s College of Santa Fe. Jennifer, the Dean of Admissions, always made sure to talk about the aesthetic beauty of campus. It was only after being on Kenyon’s campus that I could truly appreciate how beautiful it really is! It is one of the most beautiful that I have seen, right alongside University of Washington and Furman College. We had dinner with the admissions staff and a number of students at the Village Inn, which was absolutely delicious. I had a chance to get to know a few Kenyon students and I was really impressed with the spectrum of their interests. One was really passionate about educational advocacy, another student was an international studies major who had applied for the peace corps and a Fulbright scholarship, while others were busy conducting science research with professors on campus. After dinner, we were treated to an ice cream at the legendary Kenyon Bookstore. I was really impressed with everything that was available for purchase there, and the ice cream was awesome! When visiting a college – whether by car, foot, or bike – take time to absorb the campus culture. Learn not only about the academics, but also the student body and the campus itself. When thinking about the relationship between the authority of scripture and the historical reliability of the Bible, it is important to understand the definitions of the two key words at hand. Suicide is going to claim more lives than any of us realize. As the people of America, we have very little knowledge of what suicide is doing. Suicide has turned into a bigger problem than anyone understands by claiming a higher percentage than any other reason for death in the US. It also has claimed an area of the country to host itself and is using the internet to ruin people’s lives. Suicide is a larger problem than other forms of death such as homicides and car crashes. In 2009, Suicide was recorded as the top killer of humans in America. Suicide death rates have increased 15% between 2000 and 2009. On May 9th, 2016, the Boston University Archaeology Department held a public outreach event called, â€Å"Eating Archaeology†, where guests were served foods from four different time periods and places: Bronze-age Mycenae, Bronze-age China, Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, specifically the Aztecs, and mid-19th century Boston. The creation of these dishes was made possible through analyzing archaeological sites through the lens of the newly popularized sub-field, archaeology of the senses, which studies how the materiality of the world contributes to and is influenced by how humans use their senses (Hamilakis 4). Through analyzing the bodily senses, archaeologists can create a more detailed interpretation of the experiences of ancient humans (Hamilakis i). This new interest in the sensory aspect of human culture brings a fascination with the types of foods that people consumed in the past. With this in mind, a group of graduate students in the fields of archaeology, food history, and gastronomy, at Boston University, collaborated to test if material remains can be used to recreate ancient recipes. Through eating these foods, one can glimpse a part of the culture that ate the dish, illustrating the power of taste, and demonstrating that archaeology can be used to create something tangible for the public. This essay explores the criticisms of federalism by examining the vertical fiscal imbalance ad the power dynamics associated with the funding relationships, reviewing the ambiguity in role and fun ctions of the tiers of government and discussing the limited capacity of the current system to provide clear and consistent legislation to support global operation. After reviewing the negative views of federalism and why the system is struggling to deliver effective government the essay will explore some of the options for reform, these options like the suggestions made by the roundtable review of federalism will focus on improving the current system. Federalism creates significant over lap in function and effort between governments, leading to a lack of role clarity, inefficiency and duplication of function (Fenna 2007: 298; Wanna 2007: 277). The blurred lines of responsibility and lack of clarity concerning the roles and functions of each level of government makes the system inefficient. The recent trends of federalism in Australia have seen the Commonwealth intervening on state and territorial matters hence creating a conflict of responsibilities (Tiernan, 2008). The Commonwealth has significant economic and financial power over the states due to the centralization of functions and the revenue base of the Commonwealth. This results in conflict in areas of responsibility and is evidenced by exploring the power dynamics within the funding relationships of government. With the Commonwealth holding the purse strings of the nation, a power imbalance is created. The states have insufficient revenue to meet the costs of service delivery and rely upon significant financial allocations from the commonwealth to carry out their functions; this is known as the vertical fiscal imbalance. The financial allocation and distribution of resources to the states has enabled the Commonwealth to have significant and direct input into the way funding is spent by the states. This undermines one of the key benefits of the federal system, the ability of states and territories to solve local issues by implementing solutions that are relevant to concerns specific to its states (Tiernan, 2008). Further to the financial argument is the focus of governments on cost shifting. A great deal of time and energy is spent determining who should pick up the check, and with the division of responsibilities being so unclear it supports the ongoing discussions over who should pay for what. With limited resources available to each of the tiers of government this argument has significant traction and the incentive for governments to shift the costs to others is clear. The complex nature of delivering service across the states due to lack of harmonisation of critical legislative frameworks is clear when exploring the interstate train example. This project has had in principle agreement from all governments since 1996, due to legislative barriers and challenges has been unable to gain traction. Operating an interstate train in Australia involves answering to seven rail safety regulators, three transport accident regulators, six rail access regimes, 15 occupational health and safety laws and 75 environmental laws. Steketee, 2008:193) The absurdity of this example highlights the need to review current regulations and establish consistency amongst Commonwealth and State legislation in order for Australia to operate effectively in a global environment. The relations between the three levels of government, and multiple governments within one level, impose institutional constraints on what individual governments can do and on their capacity to reform the machinery of government. (O’Faircheallaigh et al. 999:97) The pragmatic position to federalism, under pinned by these constraints advocates for reform within the current structure and it is from this position that this essay begins to explore opportunities for reform. Reform opportunities of the current model of federalism focus around the key criticisms outlined, the need to align the responsibilities of the layers of government, devolution of functions and review of the legislative influence exercised by the Commonwealth when purchasing service delivery from the states. Wanna et al. 2009: 9). It is essential that all tiers of government are responsive to the needs of the local community. Subsidiarity is essential, in achieving this goal as it endorses the most local form of government to address the issue (Wanna et al. 2009: 9). This devolution of power supports a robust democratic system of government, one that facilitates input and allows for consideration of a multitude of community views in the decision making process and the shaping of policy agendas that inform service delivery. An important facet of this is the need to focus Commonwealth attention on purchasing outcomes for service delivery and allowing the states to determine the mechanisms for achieving the results (Podger 2008: 36; Wanna 2007: 278) Federalism itself is not the problem. It is the funding and broader relationship complexities, the lack of clarity surrounding roles and responsibilities and the interface of legislation that needs to be addressed to improve the functioning and outcomes of the system. Despite the significant and often valid criticisms of federalism, it is a strong economic performer by international standards. Federalism provides a flexible and responsive framework to support management of changes in the global environment while maintaining a politically stable democracy. Federalism is regarded as one of the best governmental systems for dealing with the twin pressures produced by globalisation – the upward pressure to deal with some matters at the supra-national level and the downwards pressure to bring government closer to the people.
